The basics of a diet: 1 | Introduction

When most people think of a diet they imagine the dreadful days where you cannot eat anything you really want to eat and you have to stick to uncooked vegetables, cooked rice with chicken breast, and tasteless drinks without sugar in them. In reality a diet is much less worse; even the person sitting next to you in a restaurant, ordering the exact same meal as you, can be following a diet without you knowing it.

A diet simply means you stick to predetermined meals plans instead of eating whatever you feel like when you feel like it. This does not have to mean you determine days upfront if you will eat fried rice with pork or noodles with chicken, but you should have a broad idea of the amounts you plan to eat every day and how to balance them over the day. A diet is not only for people who want to lose weight, also when you are below a healthy body weight you can use a diet to gain a few extra kilo’s or when you have the ideal weight you can use a diet to improve your general health and hold on to your current weight. In short: a diet is useful for everybody who wants to maintain or improve their current levels of health.

When you search on the internet for diets you will be able to find detailed meal plans, promoted by famous and less famous people, which helped them reach their goals. While you can simply try to copy what they did you will notice you run into many problems. First of all you will not be able to exactly match their diets; for example because they eat meals at times that you are working and cannot take a break, or because they have access to products and restaurants not available in your area. Secondly, and this is a larger problem, even if you can exactly replicate what they are doing you will notice the effects on your body are totally different. Where they lose a few kilograms with their diets you might gain a few kilograms with exactly the same diet or you might lose an equal amount of weight but lack energy all day long. The reason for this is simple: a diet has to be custom made for each person and with trail-and-error you will need to keep adjusting your diet continuously based on how your body reacts to it.

Building a diet is therefore not something you do in a few minutes: it will take time to understand your nutritional needs and how to fulfill them in a way that works for you. And even after that you will have to monitor your progress and experiment to find improvements. On the other hand, when you understand the basics and start living with a diet you will notice it will take little effort on a day-to-day basis. And besides feeling great you will also reach many of your objectives without much trouble, no matter if it is losing weight, gaining weight, or improving your sport capabilities!
In the following articles we will guide you through building a customized diet plan that will help you reach your goals. You will not only end up with a good understanding of how your body reacts to certain foods, you will also have a fair idea how to finally reach your ideal body without much effort.
